Velite Gladiators are spear-armed warriors picked up from the arena and thrown into battle. At best against infantry they will disrupt formations, but they scare off horses and elephants almost better than javelins. Incendiary Pigs are pigs coated in tar, set on fire, and sent into enemy lines. Even when their human wranglers rout or die off, these dogs will keep biting, and its impossible to get them away unless your men do it automatically. Wardogs were never really used on a scale as large as in the game, but they were really just starved dogs who chase the enemy down. The were, obviously, Praetorian Cohorts mounted on horseback. Praetorian cavalry isn't the best cav in the game (cataphracts!), but they are the best roman cavalry. The forst heavy cavalry available to you, the can smash their way through light spearmen and take only minimal casulties. Legionary cavalry was essentailly legionaries mounted on horseback. When you invade Rome in the campaign, these guys will be waiting for you. They were the closest thing to a police force Rome ever had. They were hand picked by the "people of Rome" (The Emperor) and tasked with defending Rome. Urban cohorts are the best infantry in the game hands down. They also contain more men than the earlier units. all of the cohorts carry pila, but strangely less pila than the pre-marian units. Praetorian Cohorts are the one of the best infantry units in the game, capable of charging head on into a phalanx and breaking through the wall of spears. The first cohorts, incase you were wondering, are more elite than the regular cohorts. Legionary Cohort and Legionary First Cohort are the later versions of the early cohorts. They are way better than hastati, and any barbarian soldier will fall if they get a head on charge against these guys. Early Legionary Cohort and Early Legionary First Cohort are the early versions of the standard legionary after Marius. Heavy cav will rip them apart if they can get a good charge. Auxilia are the equivelents of Town Watch, but this time they are armed with spears. Light auxilia are the equivelent of velites, javelinmen who throw light javelins. Here are the units you gain access to after The Marian Reforms. They take place sometime after 105 B.C., when Gaius Marius made the Roman Army a professional fighting force. The Marian Reforms are the single most important event in the entire game. They carry spears and are just as fast as the Equites, but with more hitting power. Roman Cavalry are the heavier version of the Equites. They can form a Cantabrian Circle, as with all other missile cav, and throw heavy javelins. Cavalry Auxilia are the only Roman missile cav in the game, and are also good at hand-to-hand. But they are fast, and therefore good for Hammer and Anvil attacks. Morale is moderate, they have almost no charge bonus, and they carry a spear and nothing else. Speaking of cavalry, Equites are the first cavalry unit available, and they aren't the best by far. But they move slower, and still have a weakness against cavalry. They carry pila, and are much better armored than hastati. Principes are the first heavy infantry unit that is available in the Imperial Campaign. Surprisingly good at melee, and can hold their own against other peltasts or even cavalry for a short time. Velites are light javelinmen who throw light javelins at an enemy. They are very easy to train and can defeat other light infantry units like barbarian warband or Carthaginian Iberian Infantry. They carry pila, which are heavy javelins thrown before they charge, and move slightly faster than triarii (supposedly). Hastati will be the backbone of any starting army. They require an army barracks, which we will talk about later. Any cav unit, even some cataphracts, will rout when in prolonged combat with triarii. But their biggest use in the game is against cavalry. They carry no pila, and have tighter formations than most of their roman counterparts. Triarii are heavy spearmen with a decent attack, and great defense. Archers and triarii, which cannot be retrained yet, hastati, which are light infantry, velites, which have a limited selection of missiles and are terrible at melee, and then town watch, which are useless. When you start your RTW campaign, you have a rather limited selection of units.
